What you’re seeing here is something we rarely get to appreciate with the naked eye. A small part of space, captured in a way that makes it feel much closer and more real.
This wasn’t an easy image to take. Shooting something this distant and detailed takes patience, precision and a lot of trial and error. I worked through many different settings and carefully calculated my exposure to pull as much detail as possible from the night sky, all while keeping the stars sharp and natural. You wouldn’t see this level of detail with the naked eye, so to bring the image to life, I combined over 700 RAW images, carefully stacking them to reduce noise and reveal the finer delicate details within the nebula. From there, the image was refined to bring out the depth, colour, and structure that make M42 so incredible to look at.
When you see something like this, you can’t help but wonder how small we really are within an endless universe, and whether there’s something more beyond it.

This image has been created using a deep sky astrophotography workflow, built from over 700 RAW exposures stacked in DeepSkyStacker to maximise detail and reduce noise across the Orion Nebula. Due to the limitations of shooting at high ISO and long focal lengths, combined with the stacking process, some fine noise and minor artefacts may still be present. This is a very normal and expected characteristic of deep sky imaging, especially when capturing faint light from distant objects like M42. The image has been carefully processed to balance detail, colour and sharpness without over smoothing, preserving a more natural and authentic representation of the nebula. For optimal viewing, I recommend sizes up to 12″×18″ (30.5 × 45.7 cm), where the level of detail remains strong when viewed at a typical distance. That said, please feel free to choose any size that suits your space, knowing this is part of the image and the process behind it.
